The Former School-Based Counselor Group was formed because being a former school-based counselor was, and still is, a huge part of our identity. The majority of our group has over 10 years of experience working in schools prior to becoming private college consultants. As we work with students and their families, we bring a unique perspective to our role. Our experience in the school setting has prepared us to work with diverse learners and students with a wide range of post-secondary goals. Many of us held school counseling licensure, which typically requires coursework in mental health counseling, equipping us to navigate emotions and sometimes tough topics that arise during the college search process. We understand how to navigate the college planning admissions process within the context of each high school’s unique curriculum and policies.
How We Can Help
1. Counseling from a student-centered lens
We have experience with a diverse range of learners, with a wide range of GPAs and test scores. We assess each student’s individual needs and goals to support them finding the best fit for them across the college search, extracurricular activities, and enrichment opportunities. We value promoting colleges that suit each individual student, rather than molding students to specific colleges, to increase student success and well-being.

2. Experienced in academic advising
In the school setting, we were responsible for advising students on course selection and academic opportunities that aligned with both the high school’s graduation requirements and their college aspirations. As college counselors working independent of a school, we can provide objective guidance with helping students and families navigate the variety of courses available in high schools and the nuances of planning a pathway that will most benefit their academic growth.

3. Experience with wrap-around services
The college planning process can be stressful and bring out a range of emotions. Sometimes tough topics come up along the way. Should a student disclose mental health struggles in an essay? They may confide that they have been feeling heightened anxiety or depression during the application process. Our background and training equips us to navigate these situations with compassion and share resources to support you.

4. We “speak” high school
As former school-based counselors, we have lived and experienced the high school counselor side of the admissions process. and have helped many students navigate communication with their teachers.. Whether asking for help with difficult concepts, initiating a conversation about academic interests, or asking for a letter of recommendation, we can assist students in learning how to effectively communicate their needs, practice their skills, and help them build positive relationships within their school building. We also welcome working as partners with your school counselor if they are interested.
