The Former School-Based Counselor Group formed because being a former school-based counselor was, and still is, a huge part our identity. The majority of our group has over 10 years of experience working in schools prior to becoming private college consultants. As we work with students and their families, we bring a unique perspective to our role. Our experience in the school setting has prepared us to work with diverse learners and students with a wide range of post-secondary goals. Many of us held school counseling licensure, which typically requires coursework in mental health counseling, equipping us to navigate emotions and sometimes tough topics that arise during the college search process. We understand how to navigate the college planning admissions process within the context of each high school’s unique curriculum and policies. We look forward to building partnerships to better support you and your institution’s recruitment goals.
How We Can Help
1. Introduce your institution to our students
The IECs in our group work with a range of students from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds across the country, and internationally. Despite the reputation of our field, many of us work with a large number of students in public high schools, especially in states where the counselor to student ratios are extremely high. Our students rely on us to understand “college fit” and to help expose them to post-secondary opportunities they would not have otherwise known about. It is important to us to stay informed about all colleges and universities so that we can be the best stewards possible to the students and families we serve.

2. Introduce your institution to other credentialed IECs
The IEC field is vast and, unfortunately, does not currently require licensing to ensure ethical practices. Our group has the shared professional background of training required to work in high schools, in addition to being connected with IECs who are members of associations requiring a professional code of ethics, such as IECA and NACAC. Our members are happy to serve as a resource to connect you with reputable and student-centered IECs.

3. Serve as a resource for your institution in our respective regions
As professionals who formerly worked in high schools and now work with students across a multitude of high schools in our area, we are very familiar with the local secondary landscape. As representatives from your institution visit our areas, we would be happy to serve as a contact to assist with any questions regarding high schools, other resources in the area, or to meet up for a cup of coffee.
